Men Don’t Read
a book club/therapy group for men.
I read that men don’t read. Oh, and they don’t go to therapy either. Well here is a place for fathers to do both, together, and grow along the way.
Men Don’t Read is a weekly support group for dads looking to hone their IRL skills in the age of the YouTube tutorial. During each 75 minute session, we’ll talk about life, relationships, fatherhood, and the actions we take to grow.
A book club or a therapy group?
Both!
Fatherhood on its best days can feel isolating. Weirdly, personal growth can feel isolating, too. How do we usually try? We google an issue we’re dealing with, alone. We read a self-improvement book (the first chapter anyway), alone. We discuss an issue with a friend but not too much! Even a course of therapy that’s really helping can feel isolated or separate from “real life”. We’ve started the Men Don’t Read group to undo the isolation of fatherhood and personal growth. To start we will discuss books that describe actionable tools and the how when and where of using them. One book per month so we can go deep but also because you’re busy. You will able to find what works for you supported by the shared experience of a group of dads.
It is important to say that this is a therapy group that reads books and books sometimes have strong beliefs. You will not be asked to believe anything in this group. We are here for your insight, effort and lived experience. If something doesn’t work for you, dump it. But tell us about it!
The Men Don’t Read concept is supported by research into how men form supportive connections with one another. It’s led by Therapy for Dads cofounder, dad and personal growth enthusiast, Rafe Stepto, LCAT, MT-BC.
We meet online (for now) Thursday nights at 7 pm and the group is limited to 6 members. Each session is 75 minutes and the fee is $65. New members are required to commit to 6 sessions upfront (at a reduced rate of $330).
If you’re curious about joining the group, reach out to rafesteptolcat@gmail.com to check availability and set up a consultation to see if it’s a good fit.

We will start the Tools by Phil Stutz and Barry Michels. Yes, of Stutz Netflix fame. Our initial focus will be on trying out actions in real life. Once a tone of action is set we will move out into other kinds of books.

We’ve set a pace of a book a month hoping that accounts for the craziness of life and fatherhood. And the books are picked because they’re great for discussion. But life happens. The books we read are a starting point. Your experiences are the most important thing. There’s no such thing as coming to Men Don’t Read empty handed. And besides: “behind”, “wayward”? All good stuff for a therapy session, no?

Probably. You’ll need to look into your out-of-network benefits, but there’s a very good chance that you’ll get reimbursed for some portion once you meet your deductible.
